To the north of Dundee are several Angus villages, or communities which are little more than hamlets. Strathmartine may be familiar on account of its former orphanage and hospital but the history behind its name is certainly colourful. The village is named after a mystical dragon slayer and, on a similar theme, a boulder at nearby Bridgefoot marks the spot where the creature is said to have met its fate.

The Howe of Strathmartine, dissected by the Dichty Burn, enjoys a reputation for top quality farmland and agriculture has long played an integral role in the economy of the district. Nestling at the foot of the Sidlaw hills, Tealing, the "Gateway to Angus," is one of the bigger communities - topping 500 residents - and it enjoys a local hall and primary school. Naturally, residents look to Dundee for the full range of big city amenities.
