Area: Newport-on-Tay
In the northeast of Fife, Newport-on-Tay is a commuter town that lies on the banks of the River Tay, just a few minutes’ drive from the Tay Road Bridge, which connects to the city of Dundee in under 10 minutes by car. The town is home to excellent amenities and everyday essentials such as minimarkets, a butcher, a bakery, a grocery store, several independent retailers, a doctor’s surgery, a pharmacy, a Post Office, a hairdresser (which also provides beauty and barbering services), cafés, restaurants, and takeaways. For more extensive shopping and cultural facilities, there is nearby Dundee, where you will find all your needs met, including shopping centres, high-street retailers, and supermarkets. Newport-on-Tay has its own community centre which hosts a number of community groups, activities, and education classes. A gym, games hall, and a full-size grass sports pitch can be found at Waterstone Crook Sports Centre in the town, whilst additional fitness and swimming facilities and groups can be found in the surrounding area, including Dundee. Nursery and primary schooling are provided locally, with secondary and further education available in Dundee and St Andrews. Travelling around the county, into the capital, and further afield could not be easier from Newport-on-Tay, with train stations in nearby Dundee and Broughty Ferry, excellent bus links, and nearby major road links.
The opening of the Tay road bridge in 1966 ensured Dundee became easily accessible from north-east Fife.
Tayport, Newport-on-Tay and Wormit are strung along the estuary's southern bank hillside, enjoying spectacular views over the river and the two bridges. Away from the waterfront are villages like Gauldry and Balmerino, with the latter's beauty and ruined 13th Century abbey celebrated in verse by William McGonagall. It enjoys Conservation Area status.
Newport was briefly christened "New Dundee" by Guildrymen who financed development plans. The pier and inn date back to 1715 with a Telford-designed harbour built in 1820.
Tayport rubs up against the Tentsmuir Nature Reserve and is home to Scotscraig Golf Club. In times past it was known as Ferry-port on Craig, before the Victorian railway line arrived in the 1850s.
These communities may look towards Dundee for "big city" amenities but easily accessible Cupar and St Andrews also provide secondary school educational and shopping options.
