How to Get Your Garden Ready for Winter

As the days shorten and the air turns crisp, October is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the colder months ahead. A little care and attention can protect your plants, keep your outdoor space looking tidy, and ensure your garden is ready to bloom again in spring.

Here are some simple ways to get your garden winter-ready:

Harvest Vegetables and Tidy Up

Start by harvesting vegetables like tomatoes and courgettes, which don’t tolerate freezing temperatures. Store them correctly indoors. Hardier vegetables such as brussels sprouts, broccoli, spinach, and kale can withstand light frosts and can remain in the ground. Clear away dead leaves, plants, and flowers to prevent pests and diseases from spreading. Remove weeds and debris from borders and beds to keep everything neat and ready for spring.

Tip: To avoid infections spreading, diseased plants should be binned rather than composted.

Protect Plants, Trees, and Shrubs

Add a couple of inches of compost to your garden beds in the late autumn to allow the soil to soak up nutrients over winter. Then, add a layer of straw, mulch or woodchips around the base of the plants to protect their roots from frost and prevent soil erosion.

Cut back dead branches on shrubs and trees to avoid breakage during heavy frost or snow but be careful not to prune spring-flowering shrubs too heavily, as this can remove next seasons buds.

For particularly vulnerable plants, set up fleece or row covers to shield them from the worst of the cold and wind.

Care for Your Lawn

Rake up fallen leaves to prevent moss and mould, and give your lawn a final mow if conditions allow. Applying an autumn lawn feed will strengthen roots before the frost sets in, ensuring your beds are ready for planting in the spring.

Plan for Next Season

Winter is a great time to plan ahead. Note which plans thrived this year, and think about which vegetables to grow or new plants to try next season. Preparing now will make spring planting smoother and more successful.

Extra Tips

Wildlife: Consider adding bird feeders or leaving log piles to support wildlife.

Garden Furniture: Protect outdoor furniture with covers or move them to a shed to prevent weather damage.

Watering: Even in winter, occasional watering may be needed if there’s little rain.
